Low Noise with the Sony IMX678 Sensor

By taking advantage of the Sony IMX678 remarkable near infrared response, ZWO has essentially merged the benefits and specs of the ASI178MC with the advantages of the sensor making an excellent color camera for planetary, solar and lunar use!

Benefits of Back Illuminated Design

Back illuminated sensors (BSI for short) such as the Sony IMX678 have a distinct advantage over front illuminated by having less digital noise due to the sensor construction and are superior for low light. This makes the ZWO ASI678MC Color Camera a no brainer for a planetary imager!

ASI178MC, but a step up!

The ZWO ASI678MC is very similar to the ASI178MC, but it has a number of improvements. Since the camera adapters the latest STARVIS 2 technology, it has zero amp glow which can cause unwanted brighter spots in images, lower readout noise for better quality and higher sensitivity. In addition, the dark current noise is decreased while the near infrared is even better.

USB 3.0 Interface and 256MB DDR3 Memory

The ASI178MC utilizes USB 3.0 interface for stable connection as well as 256MB DDR3 Memory for secure data transfer without interference. This is particularly useful for long exposures since it avoids frame dropping and unwanted glow by slow reading spead.

Say Goodbye to Amp Glow

A major plus of the ZWO ASI678MC is zero amp glow regardless of exposure time or gain value. It also doesn't need to be controlled via software since it is implemented in the hardware

HGC Mode for High Gain Efficiency

The newly added HCG mode reduces readout noise at high gain. This keeps dynamic range the same regardless of low or high gain. The readout noise at 0.8e can maintain a dynamic range of around 12 bit.

Lower Dark Current Noise than ASI178MC

With the lower dark current noise compared to the ZWO ASI178MC, signal to noise ratio is much more efficient! This results in a much smoother dark frame in the ASI678MC.
