The ZWO ASI294 is an 11.7mp color CMOS camera with Sony's IMX294 4/3 sensor. The camera has a number of benchmarks that make it an ideal choice for applications such as planetary observing and more basic level deep sky imaging as well.

Supports Ultra High Resolution 4k

The IMX294CJK consists of a pixel array of 4144x2822, which exceeds the requirement to be considered 4k at 120 frames per second.

Impressive Signal to Noise Ratio

The ZWO 294 excels remarkably at low illumination applications since the Signal to Noise ratio (SNR) is supported by a relatively larger 4.63um pixel size. This makes lower light sources more apparent, particularly when boosting exposure time relative to unwanted noise. This also helps improve color retention as well.

14 Bit ADC

As a step up from a more typical 12 bit ADC sensor, the ZWO ASI294 Color CMOS camera consists of a 14 bit ADC sensor which improves digital data being rendered from the information collected and processed by the sensor. This results in less noise, superior dynamic range, overall better quality frames, and the ability to prevail better in lower light conditions that make post processing much easier.

Sensor Performance Measurements

Impressive Quantum Efficiency with BSI Sensor Design

One of the first hurdles any sensor must have to ovrecome for maximum performance to the end user is a good quantum efficiency level. This means it is effective at processing its captured photons and converting them into electrons for a digital file. One of the best ways to obtain a higher QE is with back illuminated sensors such as the IMX294 found in the ZWO ASI294 Camera. These sensors don't have wiring obstruction over the photon sensitivity layer and therefore by nature have higher QE levels to begin with.

The ASI294 Color camera is USB 3.0 compatible which supports 16 frames per second at 14ADC mode or 19 frames per second at 12ADC mode at full 11.7mp resolution.
