WD-20P Features
- The WD-20P implements advanced brushless direct drive servo motors equipped with high-resolution encoders, enabling ultra-smooth and virtually silent performance while delivering outstanding precision in positioning and motion control.
- Motor shafts are directly connected to the harmonic drive, eliminating the need for belts or planetary gear reducers, thus avoiding issues like backlash and belt degradation.
- The WD-20P withstands up to 48 lbs without counterweights, and up to 66 lbs with counterweights, making it suitable for heavy optical tubes like the Askar 130APO, 150APO, and Celestron C11, particularly if used with imaging trains.
- The mount weighs only 12.5 lbs, enhancing portability without compromising on performance and payload capacity.
- Delivers up to 150W of power through the dual saddle, reducing cable clutter and simplifying setup. It has dual power ports of PD3.1.
- Offers 0° to 90° altitude adjustment with 30° increments for coarse positioning; supports alt-azimuth mode at 90° altitude.
- Equipped with GPS positioning systems for automatic date, time, and location setting, facilitating remote observatory operations.
- Facilitates remote control and automated homing, enhancing usability in remote setups.
- Supports both Vixen and Losmandy style dovetail plates, offering versatility for various telescope configurations.
- Supports a slew rate of 5°/s (Standard 1/2Max), 10°/s (Max).
- Supports WIFI 802.11g/Bluetooth.
High Precision Encoder Positioning with Direct Servo Drive Technology
The WD-20P is a harmonic drive mount that utilizes Servo Direct Drive technology. With a remarkable payload to weight ratio, it can withstand demanding equipment such as the Askar 130APO and 150APO as well as the Celestron C11 optical tubes.
The Right Ascension (RA) and Declination (DEC) axes are controlled by servo motors that are paired with high-precision encoders, thus guaranteeing not only exceptional positioning accuracy and smooth, quiet operation, avoiding the common issues like vibration and stepping that are often found in traditional systems using stepper motors, but also with an included home sensor, both axes can be controlled via a remote observatory.
In this system, the motor shafts are directly connected to the harmonic drive, which allows for direct transmission of power without relying on supplementary components such as belts or planetary gear reducers. This design choice effectively avoids problems related to belt degradation, fluctuations in belt tension, and backlash typically associated with planetary gear systems, thereby maintaining consistent and reliable precision in the positioning of the axes.
150W of Power through the Saddle
The WD-20P is a step up from the original WD-20 by offering up to 150W of power with its new internal framework delivering power through the dual saddle itself. This in turn also reduces risk of cable clutter. The two ports on the side of the saddle are:
- PD3.1 5/9/12/15@3A 20V@5A / PPS 0~20V@6A
- PD3.1 5/9/12/15/20@3A / PPS 0~20V@3A / Mount PC Connection
Fantastic Payload to Weight Ratio
The payload to weight ratio is a critical factor in determining the effectiveness and efficiency of a harmonic mount. In the case of the WarpAstron WD-20P, it is designed to support a standard load capacity of up to 48 lbs without the need for additional counterweights. This capability is significant because it allows the mount to handle substantial payloads while maintaining a streamlined and less cumbersome setup.
The equatorial mount, including the dovetail plate that accommodates both Vixen and Losmandy styles, itself weighs only 12.5 lbs, thus enhances the mount's portability and ease of handling, while still offering robust support for heavy optical tubes such as a Celestron C11. With the payload to weight ratio being high, the mount can effectively support larger telescopes or cameras without compromising stability or performance, thereby improving the overall efficiency of observational or astrophotographic setups and being an excellent fit for long exposure imaging where even slight fluctuation in tracking or error can ruin performance.
0° - 90° Altitude Adjustment
The system provides complete altitude adjustment capabilities ranging from 0° to 90°. For coarse positioning, it allows adjustments in increments of 30° per step. When set to alt-azimuth mode at the 90° altitude setting, users can switch between different modes using the Hand Controller. This flexibility in adjusting the altitude and changing modes enhances the versatility and ease of use for various observational or imaging applications.
