Viewing the Sun safely doesn't have to be expensive! Solar filters are an economical way to take advantage of your current telescope but still see or photograph the Sun in awesome detail while keeping your eyes and camera safe.  Filters come in two basic types for solar observing and imaging: broadband and narrowband. Broadband filters are often referred to as white light filters because they allow the full color spectrum through but block out harmful UV rays creating a grayish white image of the Sun. White light filters are best suited to viewing sun spots and are the most economical choice. They come a wide range of sizes and individual sheets to fit any telescope or binoculars you might need Narrowband filters filter the Sun's light to a specific wavelength. For solar observing this is typically either H-Alpha or Calcium. These filters come in a limited range of apertures and, in many cases, require an adapter to attach to your existing telescope. Narrowband filters must also be paired with a blocking filter to reduce the intensity of the light before it reaches your eye or camera and usually sold as a set. H-Alpha filters provide a false color image of the Sun in an orange/yellow tint and enhance solar flares. Calcium filters produce a blue/violet image of the Sun and are typically best suited to imaging. Having trouble finding the ideal filter? Chat with us! We're here to help you choose.
