This radio telescope was developed by Radio2Space to allow everyone to approach this fascinating science with this affordable, turn-key, high-performance product.

Thanks to Radio2Space patented technology, SPIDER 230C uses the equatorial mounts normally used in optical telescopes. In this way, if you have an equatorial mount with at least 50 Kg of payload capacity, you can use it to create your own radio telescope! A compact radio telescope with large 2,3 meter diameter parabolic antenna

The Radio2Space Spider 230C is a compact radio telescope that uses the WEB230-5 antenna, a mesh 2.3-meter diameter parabolic antenna designed to offer a large diameter with the lowest possible weight. It weighs much less than a normal 1.5 meters diameter full-surface model in respect to which it offers a better resolution capacity (due to greater diameter) and a lower wind sensitivity (since the surface is perforated). The reflecting surface of this antenna (the primary reflector) is composed of an aluminum mesh with 3x4 mm holes for optimum reflectivity of radio waves with frequencies up to 5 GHz.

Designed to be used with equatorial mounts

The Radio2Space Spider 230C is a compact radio telescope designed to be used with computerized equatorial mounts already used by amateur astronomers in normal optical telescopes. These mounts offer, a high load capacity and pointing/tracking precision at a low price. We supply the SPIDER 230C with an EQ8 SynScan mount but you can install our WEB230-5 antenna on different equatorial mounts with at least 50 kg load capacity and Losmandy dovetail (the same used by many telescopes) using it just like a normal telescope. The EQ8 mount (or other computerized mounts, if you want to order the "Kit SPIDER 230C without mount") are controlled by our RadioUniversePRO software through the ASCOM platform so if you want to use your mount, make sure that it has an ASCOM driver.

Equatorial mounts support device

Our equatorial mounts support device (patented) allows you to install the WEB230-5 antenna on any equatorial mount (with Losmandy dovetail and load capacity of at least 50 kg, ie. EQ8 type). Thanks to two counterweights sliding system with protection against accidental drops, you can get a perfect balance even in declination axis for maximum tracking and automatic goto performances of the mount. Without counterweights the radio telescope would be completely biased towards the front (because of the weight of the primary reflector and LNA + illuminator group with support rods) and therefore could not properly point and track objects in the sky. A special system of rear tie rods increases the rigidity of the structure while minimizing the deformation of such a big diameter parabolic antenna.

1,42 GHz optimized feed horn

Developed specifically for 1.42 GHz Radio2Space radio telescopes, the H-FEED feed horn is designed for optimal illumination of the primary reflector allowing high gain and minimize side lobes and the spillover effect, thus obtaining the best possible performance from the 2.3 meters parabolic antenna. The feed horn is designed to allow the reception of dual polarization with support for two professional Low Noise Amplifiers (LNA) for the 1.42 GHz frequency. The feed horn is positioned in the perfect point of focus of the antenna through a rigid support with 4 supports, in order to have low obstruction and with a focusing device to precisely focus and maximize the performance of the entire radio telescope.

1420 MHz receiver

In order to get the best possible performance with the 2.3 meters diameter antenna of the SPIDER 230C, the new H142-One receiver has been specially developed, a 1.42 GHz superheterodyne type radiometer/spectrometer, double conversion (type UP/DOWN) with 50 MHz received instantaneous bandwidth (RF=1.395MHz-1.445MHz) and 14-bit analog to digital converter. The H142-One receiver has spectrometer with 1024 channels (each 61 KHz) that are displayed and processed in real time by the control software supplied with the radio telescope. Thanks to the high gain and the low electronic noise of this receiver, the SPIDER 230C radio telescope is able to record many radio sources in the Universe.

RadioUniversePRO software

The Radio2Space Spider 230C comes with the new version of RadioUniversePRO software that is specifically designed to allow you to check all the parameters, operation and record various results with the compact radio telescope. RadioUniversePRO can be installed on a standard Windows computer and is compatible with Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10. The graphical interface provides a simple mode with integrated planetarium that shows, in real time, the position of radio sources in the sky, and then allows you to simply use the SPIDER 230C radio telescope. At the same time RadioUniversePRO offers the possibility to activate the advanced interface which adds many options, customizations and typical functions of professional radio telescopes and are therefore particularly useful for expert users (that found in RadioUniversePRO the same modus operandi of the large-sized radio telescopes).

Do you want to buy the telescope but you can not visit us in our laboratory in Pordenone or you do not have available a transport car large enough to contain it? No problem! We designed SPIDER 230C to be easily removable and can be divided into 5 sturdy boxes: in this way we can ship it via UPS. Each carton box is composed of a thick outer carton and several internal carton boxes which divide various internal components. The instruments are well protected for a prompt and secure shipment. All the elements that make up the instrument are pre-installed then you have just to follow the instructions to install it in a short time and get started right away!


The equatorial mounts are not waterproof so you need to cover the radio telescope with a special protective structure (which must also protect parabolic antenna from strong wind). You can move the radio telescope in a covered and protected place when not in use. If you want to keep the radio telescope permanently installed in the field we recommend our SPIDER 300A radio telescope which is equipped with waterproof mount and electronics and therefore it has no need of protection structures.

SPIDER 230C installed in Deggendorf Institute of Technology

SPIDER 230C compact radio telescope has been chosen by Deggendorf Institute of Technology as instrument to introduce students to radio astronomy. Deggendorf Institute of Technology is a university in Bavaria (Germany) offering first level education in a modern environment equipped with the latest technology. After our first visits in which Filippo took an introductory lesson on radio astronomy to a class of students and verified the installation place, the university chose SPIDER 230C compact radio telescope.

In fact SPIDER 230C does not require a fixed location with a concrete base for be used (so they can use SPIDER 230C from the roof of the same building where they have radio astronomy lessons) but, using the same H142-One receiver and the same RadioUniversePRO software as the larger radio telescopes, still offers high performance for educational use.

SPIDER 230C installed in Deggendorf Institute of Technology: the radio telescope installed on the roof of one of university buildings

SPIDER 230C is controlled by a room on the roof of the building and from which the radio telescope is visible. Here the H142-One receiver was installed, connected to the control computer with the RadioUniversePRO software that controls the entire instrument. SPIDER 230C, unlike the larger models 300A and 500A, does not have a waterproof mount so it must be moved when not in use to protect it from rain or strong winds. But the compact structure and the not too high weight allow to perform this operation with 2-3 people in a few minutes.
