Product Description

Explore Scientific / Losmandy G-11 Equatorial Mount with Explore Scientific PMC-8 GoTo System

The designer of the G-11 mount and Tripod, Scott Losmandy has built the mount to be compatible with the most popular sized telescopes for dedicated astronomers. Himself an amateur astronomer, designer and machinist, Scott Losmandy knows what it takes to build a sturdy mount will proper mechanics for demanding astro-imaging and astronomy. The main materials used are aluminum and stainless steel for extra strength for high payloads. Scott Losmandy has permitted the Explore Scientific PMC-Eight GoTo system to be used with these mounts and the stepper motors.

The PMC-Eight Electronics are very strong and include a Multi-Processor Micro-controller with 8 independently run CPUs. The multi-processor system consists of a 64 Kbyte EEPROM Non-Volatile Memory bank, a Wireless Ethernet 10/100 with full IP function permitting operation from any place where standard client software is available, the first commercially available wireless ASCOM driver, and last but not least a serial and standard ST4 auto-guiding port. All of this can be controlled from a Windows app for PC, tablet or phone with ExploreStars, the first application from the OpenGOTO Community. Other standard astronomy and planetarium software should also work with the wireless ASCOM driver.

The newly installed high-resolution .9° 400 count stepper motors with the micro stepping controller moves the Losmandy G-11 mount . The stepper controller has the motor work at 12,800 steps per revolution with drive rates accurate to a few arc-seconds per day.

The Explore Scientific ExploreStars app, available at the Microsoft App Store, can be modified by anyone and downloaded on the electronics. For instance a Messier challenge can be created, custom lists of objects to view can be created and many more. A prize is planned to be periodically with a contest for best software code.

There is a classic four-button pattern for guiding, centering, moving and slewing on the touch screen. The user can also select and enter GoTo, Slewing, Centering and Guiding Rate and alignment is standard 2 star or 3 star. The 70,000 object database will give beginner astronomers access to a bunch of celestial objects. Along with Sidereal, King, Lunar, Solar, and user defined tracking rates; Synchronize function; Search function; Coordinate input; Custom mount support using enter-able stepper count scaling and Polar Axis Correction (ALIGNMENT PROCESS).

The Hipparcos/Tycho II database is used for stellar objects, and if possible, the Bayer, Flamstead, SAO, HD/Harvard, DM, BD/CD/CPD and GSC are crossed references. This ensures the user can search a number of these to find the star they want. The 2,000+ stars with magnitude 5.5 or brighter are loaded first, then the rest of the 68,000+ stars can be loaded at the users desire.

The RNGC/IC catalog is used for non-stellar objects, therefore allowing the user to create their own catalogs using scripts in Microsoft Access. Errors and omissions can be reported since each object has its own identification number.

This German Equatorial Mount is based on the Russell W. Porter Slip-Ring design and is composed of precision all-machined aluminum and stainless steel and finalized in black with a durable hard anodize. The included RA Extension Kit allows the user to split the mount head into two easy to carry pieces and is used to insure seamless tracking though the meridian. A durable motor assembly is also provided for astrophotography. Removable stainless steel 1-1/4 inch diameter weight shaft w/safety knob. A 21 lb. counterweight is standard equipment, and optional 7 lb and 11 lb counterweights are available. The G-11 is rated for 100 lbs. total capacity of instruments and counterweights combined.

The polar alignment adjustments are precise and smooth. The two bubble levels on the G-11 and a laser etched latitude scale is etched into 2° increments to initiate the first polar alignment setup. The Losmandy HD Folding Tripod supports the equatorial head with the massive 3" diameter and adjustable legs for accurate leveling. The 1.25" stainless steel polar axis is hollowed to allow through the polar axis of celestial poles and the optional polar scope helps speed up and simplify polar alignments. The fully locking tangent arm is from 6-68 degrees latitude. The single knob azimuth control is bi-directional with +/- 8.5 degrees adjustment.
