Product Description

Meade LX85" 8" ACF OTA with LX65 Mount - Exclusive Package!

The Meade Instruments LX85 8" f/10 ACF UHTC Catadioptric Telescope has a large aperture, long focal length, and complementary optical technologies to allow you to make detailed observations of the moon and planets, with the ability to reach out past our solar system and into the universe to catch views of wispy nebulae, spiraling galaxies, and tight star clusters.

This telescope utilizes Meade's Advanced Coma-Free (ACF) catadioptric light path to reduce color fringing and off-axis comas, enabling it to clearly resolve dim deep-sky objects and easily split binary stars with tack-sharp clarity. Complementing the ACF system is their Ultra-High Transmission Coatings (UHTC) system, which improves light transmission through the entire light path across the whole visible spectrum. A combination of high-transmittance lens coatings and highly reflective mirror coatings boosts image brightness, while minimizing external light loss and internal diffraction.

This version of the LX85 is offered here without a mount or tripod for users who already have a reliable support system and are looking to upgrade their optical tube assembly (OTA) or add another to their astronomy kit. It is outfitted with a Vixen-style dovetail rail to make it compatible with a wide variety of mounts from virtually any manufacturer. To help get new users started, Meade includes two eyepieces that produce low and high magnifications, a 90° star diagonal, and an 8x50 finderscope.

  • Large 203mm (8") aperture is ideal for deep-sky viewing as well as for viewing the Moon and planets
  • f/10 focal ratio makes it a competent optic for astrophotography and imaging
  • Long 2032mm focal length enables high magnifications for detailed lunar and planetary viewing
  • Advanced Coma-Free catadioptric design
  • Ultra-High Transmission Coatings (UHTC) system
  • Single-speed internal focusing mechanism moves the primary mirror forward and back to achieve tack-sharp images with virtually zero backlash
  • 1.25" visual back allows the use of the most popular size of eyepieces and accessories

Advanced Coma-Free System:

  • Reduces off-axis comas and astigmatism for sharper images
  • Eliminates diffraction spikes for better resolution
  • Aplanatic design produces flat, distortion-free images across the field of view—especially at the edges

Ultra-High Transmission Coatings (UHTC):

  • All corrector plate and mirror surfaces are fully multi-coated
  • Engineered to optimize visual, photographic, and CCD imaging
  • Improve light transmission across the entire visible spectrum through the optical path
  • Corrector plate coatings made up of multiple layers of aluminum oxide (Al2O3), titanium dioxide (TiO2), and magnesium fluoride (MgF2)
  • Mirror coatings consist of aluminum with multi-layer coatings of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and silicon dioxide (SiO2)
  • Optical tube assembly (OTA) only. Mount and tripod required for proper use
  • Vixen-style dovetail plate is compatible with a wide variety of mounts
  • Weight: 11.5 pounds
  • 1.25"-diameter nosepiece accepts most astronomical filters
  • 9mm eyepiece produces a high 226x power
  • 26mm eyepiece yields a low 78x magnification

Diagonal:

  • 1.25" nosepiece and holder allow the use of the widest assortment of eyepieces and accessories available
  • 90° angle places user's head in a more comfortable position when the scope is pointed directly overhead
  • Star configuration corrects viewing horizontally, but not vertically

Finder:

  • Low 8x power ensures a wide field of view for faster alignment and easier star-hopping navigation
  • Large 50mm aperture produces bright images to more easily find alignment stars
  • Crosshair reticle enables precision centering, requiring less fine-tuning in eyepiece
  • Includes mounting bracket

The Meade Instruments LX65 AZ GoTo mount and tripod were designed for small and medium OTA's (optical tube assembly) of all designs.  It features a single motorized fork arm and can carry up to 15 pounds.  This fully computerized mount features Meade's AudioStar controller and 30,000+ database with a variety of tracking modes and slew speeds.    This mount is also equipped with a two Vixen width saddle plates so you can dual mount telescopes or reserve one for a camera.  The integrated handle makes this already compact mount easier to carry.  A battery compartment that accommdates 8 C cell batteries (not included) is included along with a stainless steel tripod with center leg lock which provides a sturdy and stable base for the mount.

About the AudioStar Controller:

With a database of over 30,000 objects, including the planets, stars, nebulae, galaxies, and the complete Messier catalog, the AudioStar controller can also be programmed with custom user-defined objects. This controller is intuitive to use with a menu-driven interface allowing you to control your LX65 mount with ease.  Quickly access guided narrated tours for popular objects and the multiple alignment options.   The integrated speaker allows you to experience and share those tours while out in the field without distraction from the view within the eyepiece.

  • Motorized single-arm fork
  • Controlled through the AudioStar controller
  • Vixen-style dovetail saddle will accept most small to mid-size OTAs outfitted with compatible rails/bars
  • Secondary Vixen-style dovetail saddle enables dual-mounting of a smaller OTA, guidescope, imaging rig, or wide-field DSLR. 7-pound payload capacity
  • Integrated handle improves security when carrying to observation site and during setup and breakdown
  • Runs on eight user-supplied C-cell batteries or an external 12 VDC power source
  • 15-pound payload capacity enables the use of small to medium optical tubes of all designs plus accessories
  • 2-line LED display
  • 20-key alphanumeric keypad, red LED backlight
  • 68HC11, 8MHz processor
  • Built-in red utility light
  • 30,000+ object database
  • User-friendly menu-driven system navigation
  • Slew speeds: 1x, 2x, 8x, 16x, 64x, 0.5°/sec, 1°/sec, 1.5°/sec, 4°/sec (max)
  • Assisted alignment procedures: Easy (Two-star), One-star, Two-star, Three-star
  • Customizable guided tours for specific date, time, and location
  • Built-in speaker provides descriptions of over 500 objects, including scientific data and history
  • Predicts events to plan future astronomy sessions, such as sunrise/sunset, Moon phases/moonrise/moonset, meteor showers, lunar/solar eclipses, and equinoxes/solstices
  • Backlash compensation allows user to train out the intrinsic play between gears to improve GoTo and tracking accuracy
  • Powered by mount to be lighter and easier to use
