Built to exacting standards, the Coronado Solar Max II 60mm series of Dedicated Solar telescopes not only provides the user with a telescope with excellent portability but the ideal 60mm aperture greatly increases the resolution of detail on the surface and on the limb (the outermost edge of the disc). The SolarMax II 60 features the RichView tuning method which allows very precise direct adjustment of the primary etalon filter by a lever (shown right) in the side of the scope body which mechanically tilts the filter's bandpass of the H-alpha line, normally centered at 656.28 nm. This adjustment allows for higher contrast views of Doppler-shifted solar activity, such as moving flares. Some events on the Sun, notably active flares and coronal mass ejections (CME), are extremely fast moving. If such features occur on the disc of the Sun, their high velocity towards the observer results in their wavelength being Doppler shifted shorter than H-apha. The new RichView tuning system allows the user to fine-tune the filter to adjust for these fast moving Doppler shifted events. Additionally, you can tune for the highest contrast views of active regions, filaments, and other surface detail, or the system can be quickly and easily re-tuned for prominences on the solar limb.
The RichView mechanical tuning section sits between a two-piece Solar Filter set (left) and the objective lens. *The two-pieces of the solar filter set MUST be used together to prevent serious and potentially irreparable damage to the observers eyes! At the heart of the SolarMax II viewing system is a primary 60mm tunable etalon filter with a <0.7 Angstrom passband centered on the 656.28nm H-Alpha line. The companion component is a 10mm Blocking (Interference) Filter in a right angle star diagonal that produces a 4.6mm image. The BF-10 Blocking Filter is thermally stable (it bleeds off excess heat) so there is no drifting off the H-Alpha line as the filter heats up during use. The 10mm clear aperture of the blocking filter portion of this H-alpha system is designed to provide full disk single eyepiece views of the Sun primarily for visual use.
A Coronado Cemax (Contrast Enhanced) 25mm 1.25” eyepiece is standard equipment, providing a magnification of 16x and a 3.25° field. Cemax eyepieces use an anti-reflection multicoating formula on every surface and have been optimized for the highest possible contrast during solar viewing of subtle prominence and surface detail. 20mm of eye relief and a 52° AFOV complete this eyepiece specifically designed for H-Alpha solar viewing.
