Product Description

CELESTRON NexStar 8SE 8" Schmidt-Cassegrain Computerized Telescope

The largest model of the Celestron NexStar SE Telescope family, the 8" NexStar SE is perfect for planetary observing. For visual astronomers willing to take their hobby to the next level, this telescope is equipped with high-end optical coatings to improve light reflectivity within the mirrors. The StarBright XLT coatings boost up mirror light reflectivity up to 95%, around a 10% improvement from traditional aluminum coatings. Celestron's single arm fork mount creates an excellent and efficient slewing system especially in conjunction with the SkyAlign method. Most new astronomers may have a tough time (happens to all of us!) remembering the names of the stars, specifically when first going to a location not affected by light pollution. Celestron has fixed this problem! With the SkyAlign system, all the observer must do is align and center the scope on three bright stars and by entering the date, time and location into the NexStar controller, the computer can calculate what stars were selected and the observing session can begin. It is recommended that the optional Celestron SkySync GPS Accessory (not included) be used along with this alignment method. Once properly aligned, the NexStar hand controller has a database of 40,000 objects available to slew to! Messier, NGC, and IC objects are included as well as the planets.

The Celestron NexStar 8SE Telescope has a focal ratio of f/10 which is very suitable for observing the planets and moon or most objects with a high surface brightness in a small field of view. Some of the details that can be observed with this aperture include the cloud bands of Jupiter, the Cassini's division in Saturn's rings as well as outstanding views of the Moon and its craters. Certain deep sky objects may be within reach as well. Globular clusters such as M13 (Hercules Cluster), Orion Nebula, and the Whirlpool Galaxy may be among a few options.

The NexStar 8SE telescope out of the box has surpassed my expectations. The computerized alignment is simple and trouble free. Adding the GPS Sky Sync simplifies it even more.
The recent full moon has produced wonderful images using my Cannon EOS DSLR camera mounted on a Celestron T-Ring and T-Adaptor.
The Celestron eye piece and filter kit is a must when using the scope if you want to enhance the already superior image.
Thank you Jeff and WH Telescopes for answering my questions and directing me to the perfect product.

The Nexstar 8SE has excellent portability with enough light gathering power to REALLY start seeing detail on many objects. The optics on this scope are excellent when they are well collimated and have been brought to ambient temperature. Though considerably more expensive than an 8" Dobsonian, the portability and go-to justify the extra cost. The go-to is very accurate when properly aligned, placing the target near the center of the field of view over 90% of the time; go-to is very helpful in both very light polluted and very dark sky situations, especially when looking for some obscure double star or galaxy that is far from good reference stars for star-hopping. The object database, and the ability to go to any Right Ascension and Declination will take you to anything that the 8" optics can pull in.
The only real problem with this scope is the ineffectual AA battery system, which usually lasts less than four hours with a fresh pack of AA batteries, pretty much requiring you to carry a "power pack" battery along with the scope, taking the portability down a peg. The stability of the mount and tripod is pretty good as long as you keep the accessory load light; I recommend avoiding 2" eyepieces and diagonals, and sticking with 1-1/4" eyepieces and accessories. Be sure to build or buy a dew heater for the corrector lens; even with a dew cap, the lens quickly builds up dew more often than not.
The nature of the optics allow for a ton of accessories to be used which can enhance planetary observation, deep sky observation and astrophotography; making this system as close as you can probably get to an "all purpose" telescope.

I'm really impressed with the overall performance of this model. The focuser is buttery smooth and the GoTo is flawless. I was able to see spiral structure in M51! Woodland Hills gave me great customer service and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. Clear skies! (Posted on 2/8/2017)

I´m overseas right now but have access to a FPO address, I contacted other online stores and all of them deny to send the telescope to that address because they said it was too big package but telescopes.net did they work with usps and sent me the telescope wich I received this week and it came in perfect conditions. It's a nice telescope, big box indeed and they also included two additional vixen eyepieces and a celestron red led flashlight.
The telescope feels solid, well constructed, the optics are very nice and the goto simplifies seeing at my light polluted place.
I'm very happy with my new telescope and with telescopes.net, thank you to the Woodland hills team, special thanks to June Trajano. (Posted on 3/8/2014)

Being very new to viewing the cosmos, I was concerned about the alignment process. I had looked at the LS 8 due to the flip of a switch auto align. The price however was a deterrent. I looked at many reviews of the 8 se and after speaking with Jeff at Woodland Hills I decided to save 800 dollars and go with the Celestron 8se.

First time I tried sky align it matched and I was viewing things I never dreamed of seeing. Optics are great, sky align is extremely simple and the price was great as well. I have been enjoying many nights of viewing with this scope, although at the expense of sleep! I can't stop slewing to new objects. The sky tour is a great feature as well.

Well two weeks after I bought the 8 se for $1199, Celestron started the 10% rebate deal. Woodland Hills Camera and Telescope was great about giving me credit for the difference. Living in Las Vegas there is a large amount of light pollution to say the least. I had planned on buying a filter, but W.H. is sending me a Lumicon filter for free to make up the difference in the scope price!

For anyone worried about alignment, this scope is a great way to go. The people at Woodland hills were helpful, polite and knowledgeable. They helped me make a choice I am extremely happy with. Thanks Jeff and all at Woodland Hills Camera and Telescopes for bringing me what I'm sure will be years of enjoyment! (Posted on 5/8/2013)
