Capturing impressive deep-sky astroimages is easier than ever with Celestron’s new Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt Astrograph, the perfect companion to today’s top DSLR or astronomical CCD cameras. This fast, wide-field f/2.2 system offers two huge advantages over traditional f/10 astroimaging: better apparent tracking and shorter exposures. That means you’ll create better-looking astroimages in a fraction of the time, even without the use of an autoguider.The Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt Astrograph builds on the legacy of Celestron’s Schmidt Camera, the appearance of which made it possible for astrophotographers to produce images on film in the 1970s.

Today, with CCD sensor sizes as large as film—or larger—the Schmidt Astrograph offers a full 70 mm optimized image circle to capture pinpoint stars on the largest imaging chips. Combine this large image circle with a focal length of just 620 mm and you have an instrument suitable for wide-field imaging, creating huge mosaics of the night sky.

The Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt Astrograph features newly designed optics with 4-element rare-earth glass for images free of false color and aberrations like coma and field curvature. The optical quality and spot size across the entire image circle is unprecedented for an astrograph in this price range—or even that of a much more expensive instrument. Advanced features like a custom engineered linear brass focuser bearing and FeatherTouch Micro Focus Knob allow you to make the fine adjustments you need to capture the perfect shot. Meanwhile, a 12V MagLev fan reduces cool-down time and provides optimal air flow through the dust filtered optical tube. Engineered as a complete astroimaging system, every component of the Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt Astrograph is optimized for peak performance with DSLR and astronomical CCD cameras. Down to the thickness of the glass used in the fully-multicoated optical window or an optional imaging filter, every component of the system has been taken into careful consideration to work together seamlessly.


Celestron designs and tests their optical coatings with the aid of thin film design software in wide use throughout the optical, semiconductor, aerospace, and telecommunications industries. Using this software, Celestron has improved on all multi-layer enhanced mirror coatings, shifting the peak reflectance to the center of the visible spectrum. They have designed a completely new multi-layer anti-reflective coating and introduced a new low-absorption, high-transmission glass for the corrector lens. This unequaled combination is standard with every StarBright XLT system.

Quality components and processes: 
The coating process uses state-of-the-art thin film vacuum deposition technology. To ensure consistent optical coatings of the highest quality, the process is tightly monitored and controlled by highly-trained coating technicians. Prior to coating, each optical element is thoroughly cleaned and inspected to ensure proper adhesion of the films during the coating process. The materials used in all the reflective and anti-reflective coatings are the purest available (exceeding 99.99%) and include aluminum (Al), hafnium oxide (HfO2), titanium dioxide (TiO2), silicon dioxide (SiO2), and magnesium fluoride (MgF2).

Quality assurance:
Celestron's QA process prevents any optical element from passing if it does not meet strict standards of optical quality. Witness plates are included in each coating run and are subjected to spectrophotometric analysis to determine if the minimum acceptable transmission or reflectance has been achieved.

Celestron CGX-L Equatorial Mount

Part of the next generation of equatorial mounts from Celestron, the CGX-L features a robust load capacity of 75 pounds with an excellent load to weight ratio.  Designed with imaging in mind, you will find additional auxiliary ports and an autoguiding port on the dec for improved cable management.   Worm gears have been upgraded to a larger (compared to previous models) 144mm gear for excellent tracking and slewing with heavy loads and smart design improvements like a longer saddle plate and 2.75" provide a highly stable and secure platform for your large aperture telescope.  

With a shorter, more compact mount head and built in handles, the CGX-L is surprisingly easy to carry and assemble.  As part of it's ergonomic design, the adjustment knobs are designed for reduced friction and a stationary latitude knob with a newly-designed linkage system greatly reduces the amount of friction when polar aligning the mount. Teflon bearings on the azimuth adjustment allow you to adjust even with a full load on the mount and an the latitude scale is large, clear and easy to read.

  • Spring loaded brass worm wheel and stainless steel worm gear.  By spring loading the motor worm and gear, gear friction is greatly reduced and optimal gear mesh is maintained. 
  • Internal cabling keeps your mount free from cable clutter and reduces the chance of snagging wiring.  The power input port and accessory ports stay in one position at all times.  
  • The CGX-L has built-in physical hard stops and optical hard stops eliminating the chance that the counterweight shaft will strike the leg.   
  • Designed for easy remote control, home sensors allow you to start in the index position no matter what position the mount was in when it was powered off. 
  • Includes a USB 2.0 Nexstar+ hand controller equipped with Celestron's PWI telescope control software designed in partnership with PlaneWave Instruments, featuring multi-point mount modeling for precision pointing accuracy. 
  • Includes Celestron's All Star Polar Alignment for incredibly accurate guided polar alignment allowing you to align with any bright fixed object in the night sky.  There's no need for additional polar finders or accessories.  
  • The head of the Celestron CGX-L is fully adjustable allowing you to slide the telescope perfectly over the center of gravity and take full advantage of the 3º-65º latitude range.
