The TimeBox II from Shelyak Instruments is a compact, GPS-based time synchronization device that allows you to precisely align your Windows PC’s system clock with UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), to within ±2 milliseconds accuracy. This degree of precision is essential in many advanced astronomical applications where even tiny timing errors can significantly affect results.

The TimeBox II is an ideal time sync solution for amateur astronomers contributing to citizen science projects, professional observatories without access to high-end timing systems, researchers involved in multi-site campaigns, and anyone needing to timestamp images, spectra, or logs with reliable precision. 

The TImeBox II includes a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver that receives a signal from GPS satellites, a USB interface for computer connection, and software by Shelyak that reads the GPS signal and actively syncs your PC clock in real-time.

Events like stellar occultations, where a star is temporarily blocked by the Moon or an asteroid, require time precision down to the millisecond. By precisely logging the moment the light dims and reappears, observers can contribute to high-accuracy shape and position models for these bodies. If multiple observers at different locations record the event with accurate time stamps, the data can be used to reconstruct the shape and orbit of the occulting object.

If you're working with others in different parts of the world (e.g. pro-am collaborations or coordinated campaigns), having all clocks synced is essential for aligning datasets and comparing events.

In some advanced imaging or spectroscopy applications, such as measuring Doppler shifts over time or aligning exposures with known celestial events, precise timing can ensure the data is scientifically valid.
