The Planewave RC700 observatory system features a 0.7 m F/12 Richard Cretian optical design with a central obstruction of less than 30% for improved contrast and optical fiber coupling efficiency.  Fused silica optics are used throughout.

Dual Nasmyth focus ports are capable of holding over 300 pounds each. Paired with Planewave PWI for software on the tertiary mirror for fast changes between multiple instrumentation packages

Paired with Planewave PWI for software on the tertiary mirror for fast changes between multiple instrumentation packages.

Direct drive motors provide fast and nearly silent motion at up to 50° per second with zero backlash and zero periodic error.

On axis 26 bit absolute and coders coupled to each access provide precise pointing and stable LEO satellite tracking.

Altazimuth mount design provides a compact footprint with maximum load capacity, while eliminating the need for large and heavy counterbalance that provides a space and safety challenge particularly in public observatories.

Planewave RC700 f/12 Ritchey-Chretien Observatory System

Designed to fulfill the demands of research, commercial, and defense organizations Planewave RC observatory systems are made to the exacting standards.  Using a primary and secondary mirror only, in it's native format with no field flattening lenses making it an ideal instrument for on-axis observing and narrow-field imaging.   Designed for optimal temperature stability, the PW-RC24 features fused silica optics, a carbon fiber optical tube, an expansion joint and cooling fans.   Delta-T mirror heaters are built-in and pre-wired for the optional Delta-T hub.

Planewave RC700 Features:

  • 0.7 meter f/12 native RC optical design with no field flattening
  • Optimized central obstruction <30% for improved contrast and optical fiber coupling efficiency.
  • Dual Nasmyth focus ports with 300 pound load capacity each. Plus PWI4 controlled tertiary mirror for rapid changes between multiple instrument packages.
  • Built in Delta T Heaters, pre-wired to accept the optional Delta T hub
  • Closed carbon fiber tube design to eliminate extraneous light.
  • Expansion joint to mitigate differences in thermal expansion between the optical tub and mounting plate.
  • (3) built in cooling fans, controlled by an optional EFA kit.
  • Compatible with Series 5 rotator for derotation.

Mount Features:

  • Direct Drive motors on each axis
  • 50 degree per second slewing
  • Smooth and nearly silent operation
  • On-axis 26 bit absolute encoders on each axis for precision pointing and stable LEO satellite tracking.
  • Optional GPS/ PTP encoder sync for precision time stamping
  • Space-frame design with optional Coude Path.
  • PointXP mount modeling software included

Alt-Azimuth Mount Design

Naturally more stable than an equatorial mount, the AZ mount eliminates a cantilevered mass and the need for large counterweights than present space and safety challenges in observatory applications.  Considerably more compact than similar load capacity EQ mounts, the Alt-Az mount allows for smaller observatory foot prints and lowered cost.  Meridian flip is also not an issue for AZ mounts allowing for horizon to horizon imaging and tracking.

Nasmyth Foci

The Nasmyth focus illuminates balancing issues while changing out equipment. Located along the altitude axis, I pieces remain at a constant seated height making them more accessible to wheelchair users. This is an ideal set up for public observatories. The rotating tertiary mirror allows you to switch from one Nasmyth port to another in just a few seconds, minimizing transition time between Imaging and visual use.

Rotating Tertiary Mirror

The plane with RC 700 includes an integrated rotator for the tertiary mirror. With magnetic locks to lock the position of the mirror, Nazmyth focus position is maintained at a constant.   The rotator can switch ports in less than 10 seconds,

Direct Drive Motors & Enconders

Backlash and periodic error are eliminated with the use of direct drive motors. 26 bit absolute and coders provide feedback for the direct drive motors allowing them out to track and point with high precision, as well as counteract gusts of wind. These motors can move the telescope at up to 50° per seconds minimizing at target acquisition time, and allowing for precision tracking a fast moving objects like satellites.
