Planewave CDK500 Observatory System

This observatory package includes a Planewave CDK20 optical tube and the L500 direct drive mount.  Designed for demanding astrophotography and research observing applications, the CDK500 observatory package provides exceptional performance with no coma, off-axis astigmatism or field curvature and a mount that eliminates backlash and periodic error.  

Planewave CDK20 Features: 

  • The corrected Dall Kirkham design provides know,, no off-axis astigmatism, and no field curvature with pinpoint stars across a 52 mm image circle. 
  • Highly stable fused silica mirrors have low thermal expansion allowing for extended periods of use with minimal to no focus change.

  • A carbon fiber optical to assembly in a truss design provides rigidity and fast cooling. Three built-in cooling fans also push hot air out of the back of the telescope. 
  • A fixed primary mirror allows for simple secondary mirror collimation.  
  • Easy to reach access planets iin the fork arm and AZ axis allow for your equipment to be easily cabled through the mount for preferred cable management.

Planewave CDK20

The Planewave CDK20 is a 20 inch f/6.8 Corrected Dall-Kirkham Astrograph telescope.  With a dual carbon fiber truss tube design, the optical tube weighs a reasonable 140 pounds.  3 built in cooling fans push air from the back of the telescope to maintain temperature  over long sessions,  The CDK 20 covers 52mm field of view without field curvature, off-axis coma, or astigmatism.  A back plate retaining ring is included to accept a focuser of your choosing. 

Fused Silica Mirrors

Planewave selected fused silica glass for its unmatched stability. A synthetic amorphous glass has superior transparency and consistency throughout.  With a coefficient of thermal expansion six times lower than typical borosilicate Pyrex glass optics, fused silica maintains its shape to a high degree of accuracy as it cools down. This consistency in optical performance provides unchanged focus through temperature changes.  

Direct Drive Motors, Encoders & Slew Speed

Direct drive motors and on axes encoders eliminate the need for gears. Backlash and periodic error are thereby eliminated as well. With high resolution encoders providing feedback for the drive motors the mount system will track without periodic error or backlash. The L-500 also has the ability to counteract wind gusts with precise servo feedback.  

Capable of moving at speeds up to 50° per second, the L 500 mount can easily track fast moving objects like satellites and target acquisition times are greatly minimized.

Dual Mounting Bracket & AZ Dovetail Balance System

Designed to hold a telescope on either side of the fork arm, the L 500 mount can utilize an additional optional dovetail clamp to dual carry optical systems.  A specially designed adjustable base plate provides azimuth balance whether in AZ for EQ modes.
