Internal Focus Design, A Truly Amazing Stock Focuser

Most traditional refractors come with either a Rack and pinion or Crayford style focuser, often times users can find themselves looking to upgrade to finer focusers which can be quite costly. Reasons for this is that those looking to step up their quality often find the stock focusers that come with a majority of entry level refractors underperforming and can lead to some unwanted artifacts in their images. William Optics saw this and answered the call with their Internal focus design.  Traditional focusers use a drawtube that moves in and out of the OTA to achieve focus, however if you're attaching a camera, a filter wheel/drawer, an off axis guider or you may have a DSLR/Mirrorless camera with a battery extension then you may be packing on a heavy load on the back of the telescope. This can cause issues such as focuser slip, unwanted vignetting and what most experienced astronomers dread in their final image "Tilt!".  The internal focus design however works more in the sense of a camera lens but without the helical ring focuser some users often find dissuading to use.  This moves the lens element forward and back versus a drawtube moving in and out.  This helps as well with balance on the DEC axis as you won't have to worry about the weight shifting more in the back which often times even seasoned astrophotographers can let go unnoticed.

Say Goodbye to Tilt!

What is tilt and why is it such a frustration amongst the astrophotography community?

For those who don't know, take a look at the picture above under the traditional focuser. This best gives a visual representation of what tilt is. Basically as the drawtube moves out and with the gear you have on the back of your OTA, you'll notice that gravity will play its part as it always will. This will cause unwanted artifacts due to the camera sensor not being evenly aligned to the objective lens. The most noticeable symptoms of tilt will be one side/corner of your image will have stars that look elongated, distorted and even a bit out of focus. Many in the hobby will come up with solutions which can in itself be costly and time consuming. As you can see William Optics takes out the part where you'll be spending time fighting tilt in their internal focus design as there will not be a drawtube to be pulled down by gravity causing the flexure in which gives tilt.

Flatteners and Reducers

To achieve a flat field or if you'd like to have a flat field with a wider field of view and faster optics the WIL-P-FLAT68III and WIL-P-FLAT6AIII are best suited to achieve this (not included).
