22mm – Wide-Field & Deep Sky Sweeping

Best for: Large objects and scanning the sky

The 22mm provides low magnification and the widest true field of view, making it perfect for:

  • Sweeping the Milky Way
  • Viewing large nebulae (Orion, North America Nebula)
  • Open star clusters
  • Locating objects before switching to higher magnification

16mm – Balanced Viewing & Versatility

Your ideal eyepiece also depends on your telescope.  A simple formula to use for choosing to divide the focal length of your telescope by the focal length of the eyepiece to find the magnification and account for about 50x of magnification per inch in good seeing conditions.   For example, if you have a 4" telescope with a focal length of 1200mm, a 16mm eyepiece would give you 75x magnification well within the recommended range of up to 200x.
