Professor Karim Jaffer, Orion, and the Stories the that are not just Spoken, but Written in the Sky

Astronomy did not begin

with glass or gears,

with charts flickering in red LED light,

or cameras humming through the cold.

 

It began earlier, much earlier.

 

It began the first time someone looked up,

noticed that a few bright points

kept returning to the same places,

and felt both small

and strangely at home beneath them…

 

One of the gifts of stargazing is how it brings me back to that first act of noticing. Before instruments and images, astronomy was personal. It was patience, exploration, discovery, and curiosity shaped by time. People looked up night after night, learned what returned and what slowly changed, and began to understand their place beneath a sky that could feel immense, yet somehow welcoming.

That spirit came through clearly during a recent presentation by Professor Karim Jaffer, joining us from Montreal. Karim spoke about Indigenous stories and knowledge connected to one of the most familiar constellations in the sky, Orion. Most of us know Orion well. We can find the belt without hesitation. But Karim asked us to pause and sit with a deeper question. What has this familiar pattern of stars meant to different cultures, apart from the Greek name many of us grew up with?

What emerged was not a single story, but many. Across Indigenous cultures, Orion is not simply a hunter fixed in the sky. It becomes a teacher. A warning. A seasonal signal. A guide tied directly to survival. These stories carry knowledge about weather, food, timing, and community. The same stars we recognize so easily have taken on different meanings depending on place, climate, and lived experience. And yet, beneath those differences runs a shared human impulse. The need to connect the sky to life on Earth.

What I appreciated most about Karim’s talk was the care with which it was offered. He was clear about his role and his responsibility. He does not speak as an Indigenous voice, and he did not present these stories as replacements for modern astronomy. His aim was to widen the conversation. Indigenous star knowledge is not folklore in a dismissive sense. It is careful observation, refined over generations, carried through story rather than equations. These stories may not have been intended for a global audience, but they represent another way of knowing. One that deserves to be heard alongside science, not set apart from it.

At a time when astronomy is becoming more automated, when smart telescopes can identify objects instantly and apps can tell us exactly where to look, Karim’s presentation was a reminder that the why still matters. Technology helps us see farther. Stories help us feel connected. They anchor the stars in human experience and remind us that the night sky has always been something we share.

For the amateur astronomy community, this matters deeply. Our work has never been only about optics or data. It has always been about people. About wonder. About the moments we share under the stars. Whether we are gathered in a dark desert, standing on a city sidewalk, or meeting through a virtual star party, we are taking part in something ancient and deeply human.

To explore these ideas further, I asked Karim a series of questions that he generously took the time to answer. There was more to say than could fit in a single piece. So this conversation unfolds in parts. What follows is the first.

 

Part One: Discovering the Deeper Purpose of Indigenous Star Stories

I asked the professor these questions because I wanted to understand not just the stories themselves, but what happens to the way we see the sky when we allow more than one way of knowing to stand side by side. I only knew of Greek and Roman constellation myths, but upon hearing them I didn’t learn of their back story. As someone who has spent a lifetime sharing the night sky with the public,  I knew there had to be something more. When I talked with Karim, I wanted to learn how Indigenous star stories share careful observations, connections to the land and seasons, and knowledge passed down through families, and why it’s important to share these stories with respect.

 

Q. What first drew you toward Indigenous star stories, and how did they change the way you personally look at Constellations?

A. I grew up reading the mythologies available, which were only Greek and Roman, and enjoying how the stories were memorable but wondering the "why" - what was the purpose behind these legends taking root since most storytelling in earlier periods was a way of passing down knowledge. When I began to teach intro astronomy I realized that the constellation myths were written almost as an afterthought in most books - with the names being important to give us guidemarkers in the sky but again, the why was missing...and it was again mainly Greek & Roman. I had the opportunity to hear about the Mi'kmaw Moons Project with Dave Chapman from RASC Halifax and Cathy Leblanc from the Acadia First Nations, and began to search out more knowledge about the connections to nature, as well as the observational knowledge in the star stories beginning with the variations of the seven sisters (Pleiades) and the double-star in the handle of the Big Dipper captured in so many of the indigenous stories. As I spoke to more and more indigenous knowledge keepers, attended workshops and read some of the articles and books written the commonalities and specific details that changed in looking at the same formation of stars gave me a new way to look at the changing night sky and see it with both eyes - one with modern science and one with the observational and natural connections that helped pass down generational knowledge for millenia.

 

Q. As an educator, how do you approach sharing Indigenous knowledge with care, respect, and accuracy?

A. A key is not placing judgement on a story based on my perspective, trying to understand the face value of the legend as someone who grew up in North America - away from my own family's prior generational home and learning from standard textbooks. Listening directly to authentic voices and learning the context in which these stories are told leads to an understanding of the purpose behind the storyline, as well as a respect for the role these stories play for the communities that retain them.

 

Q. What responsibilities do astronomy communicators have when telling stories that are not originally their own?

A. When sharing the stories, it must be with permission and respect for the season/time of year when the story can be shared and understood, and encouraging the students/audience to recognize the purpose behind the stories (understanding engenders respect).

Noticing first. Learning to look without rushing.

 

Astronomical Equipment

Unaided eyes

The most important instrument here. Learn the sky as it appears naturally. Patterns emerge through repetition.

Wide-field binoculars (7×50 or 10×50)

These mirror how many cultures observed the sky: expansive, relational, and context-rich rather than zoomed-in.

Simple planisphere (latitude-appropriate)

A physical sky wheel reinforces seasonal motion better than any screen.

 

Stargazing Gear

Red flashlight with low brightness

Keeps night vision intact while encouraging patience.

Notebook and pencil

For sketches, questions, and impressions. Not measurements yet. Just noticing.

Staying comfortable makes lingering possible. Lingering is where learning begins.
