Celestron NexImage 20 Solar System Color Imager

The Celestron NexImage 20 is a powerful planetary imaging camera that builds on the legacy of the original NexImage, offering significantly improved resolution and performance. Equipped with a high-sensitivity 20-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, the NexImage 20 is designed for capturing strikingly detailed images and videos of the Moon, planets, and the Sun (when used with a proper solar filter). With a native resolution of 5240 x 3840 pixels, this camera produces ultra-sharp stills and smooth AVI-format videos, making it an ideal tool for both high-quality printing and digital sharing.

At the core of the NexImage 20 is the AR2020 CMOS sensor, featuring 1.4-micron pixels and a 7.3 x 5.4 mm sensor area. Its sensitivity rating of 8.7 ke⁻/lux-sec allows for clear, detailed imaging even under less-than-ideal atmospheric conditions. The small pixel size and high sensitivity enable precise rendering of fine planetary features, such as surface markings on Mars or the delicate banding of Jupiter.

Installation is simple and hassle-free. The camera fits directly into a 1.25-inch telescope eyepiece holder using the provided nosepiece, eliminating the need for additional adapters. This direct connection places the sensor right at the focal plane, helping you achieve high-resolution captures with minimal optical interference. For imaging smaller celestial objects, such as individual planets, the NexImage 20 supports Region of Interest (ROI) cropping. This feature allows users to isolate a smaller section of the frame, boosting the frame rate for smoother video capture while also reducing file size. This is especially useful for stacking frames during post-processing to enhance detail and clarity.

Connecting the NexImage 20 to your setup is straightforward. It includes a USB-A to USB-C cable for direct connection to a Windows PC, enabling immediate access to the camera’s functions and features. The included iCap software provides control over image acquisition, allowing users to preview, capture, and save their data with full manual adjustment of gain, exposure, and frame rate. The NexImage 20 is also equipped to serve as an autoguider, offering dual-purpose functionality for astrophotographers. When used with compatible guiding hardware, it contributes to improved tracking accuracy during long-exposure imaging sessions, making it a valuable tool for both beginners and experienced users refining their setups.

This versatile and upgraded imaging solution brings advanced capabilities to solar system astrophotography, combining high-resolution imaging with ease of use and added guiding functionality.

Celestron NexImage 20 Key Features

  • 20 MP Resolution: Captures ultra-high-resolution still images at 5240 x 3840 pixels and smooth AVI video for detailed imaging of the Moon, planets, and Sun (with a solar filter).

  • Back-Illuminated AR2020 CMOS Sensor: High-performance sensor with 1.4 µm pixel size and 7.3 x 5.4 mm sensor area for excellent sensitivity (8.7 ke⁻/lux-sec) and sharp detail, even in suboptimal seeing.

  • Direct Telescope Compatibility: Inserts directly into any 1.25” eyepiece holder using the included nosepiece—no adapters required.

  • Region of Interest (ROI) Mode: Crops the image frame to focus on smaller targets like planets, increasing frame rate, reducing file size, and optimizing post-processing speed.

  • USB Connectivity: Connects easily to a Windows PC using the included USB-A to USB-C cable for quick setup and data transfer.

  • Dual Functionality: Operates as both an imaging camera and a capable autoguider for precise tracking during long-exposure astrophotography sessions.
