PlaneWave 17" CDK17 Corrected Dall-Kirkham Carbon Fiber Truss Telescope - Fused Silica
The Planewave CDK17 is a 17” Corrected Dall Kirkham telescope featuring fused silica mirrors and a carbon fiber truss design. Built for superior thermal stability, the telescope includes multiple cooling fans, is pre-wired for dew prevention with the addition of the optional Delta-T controller, and uses a unique thermal expansion bracket to account for differences in expansion rates from the carbon fiber trusses and the aluminum dovetail.
Designed for astrophotography and to provide an affordable observatory grade solution, the CDK17 is made to perform. With no coma, astigmatism, or field curvature, this telescope delivers pinpoint stars from edge to edge across a 70mm image circle. Images are produced with exceptional clarity. When paired with a 16803 imaging sensor, users will experience a 61x61 ar minute field of view. Simplicity was also considered and the CDK17 can be collimated by adjusting a single mirror.

Corrected Dall Kirkham Optical Design
With a goal to resolve natural optical issues found in the Ritchey Chretien design, David Rowe paired a correcting doublet lens group with a spherical secondary and an ellipsoid primary mirror. The result was the CDK, a coma free, astigmatism free and curvature free design that provides pinpoint stars across a 70mm image circle.
Fused Silica Mirrors
With a coefficient of thermal expansion 6 times lower than Borosilicate Pyrex glass, fused silica optical glass is exponentially more stable as temperatures change. For long observing or imaging sessions, this added stability reduces the need to adjust focus.
Carbon Fiber Truss Design
To further minimize thermal expansion and the need to adjust focus, the open truss design of the CDK17 utilizes carbon fiber a highly stable material. Carbon fiber also has the added benefit of being strong but very lightweight, reducing the overall weight of the CDK17.
3D Printed Baffles
Using 3D printing technology, Planewave is able to produce a lightweight successive layers with highly precise positioning to minimize stray light and vignetting while maximizing contrast.
Dovetail Expansion Joint
To provide additional thermal expansion stability, the CDK17 is equipped with an expansion joint to account for the different expansion rates of the carbon fiber trusses and the aluminum dovetail.
Three rear cooling fans pull air through the optical tube near the primary mirror, and three additional fans blow air across the primary from the side of the telescope body. This combination of fans and open truss design allow the CDK17 to reach thermal equilibrium quickly. The fans are controlled by a manual switch on the optical tube or can be controlled with PWI3 software when the Planewave EFA kit is added.
