If you are looking for a great beginner scope and a completely automated GOTO mount, the A70Lf with SkyPod is the one for you.
With this package, you will have access to over 14,000 stars, planets, nebula and galaxies. In an instant you can tell the SkyPod mount to move to any object listed and actually see the star field move on the built in chart in the hand controller.
What I like most about this package is that I can start with a basic telescope to view the brighter celestial objects and later, when my desire or budget permits, I can easily demount the A70Lf and replace it with a variety of larger telescopes. The SkyPod works exactly the same way with all scopes. You don't have to buy a completely new packaget, like some other brands, just to grow your system!
My very first telescope was a 70mm (2.8”). With this size aperture you will, as I did, be on your way to discovering the craters and mountains on our moon, the rings around Saturn and the storms on Jupiter. With a star chart you will find beautiful double stars of varying colors, and on moonless nights, you will see the Andromeda Galaxy, the Orion Nebula and hundreds of other Deep Sky objects. Use for terrestrial viewing to spot those far off ships or nesting birds. The A70Lf Refractor, although inexpensive, is not a toy telescope. It has the same quality glass and exacting workmanship that goes into our much larger instruments. I hope you’ll find it as enjoyable as I did as you begin this great adventure we call amateur astronomy. Clear Skies MrStarGuy
The A70Lf is an Achromatic Refractor with 70mm (2.8”) of aperture. Its focal length is 900mm (3 ft.) with an f ratio of 12.9. This lightweight telescope has a maximum magnifying power of 143x and reaches a limiting visual magnitude of 11. Its light gathering is 100 times better than the human eye and has a maximum (realistic) power of 143X. The A70Lf Refractor weighs about 4 lbs and is covered by Vixen's 5 Year Warranty.
After having used many, many mounting systems over my thirty plus years of observing, I have to say the Skypod is a pure joy to operate. The fully enclosed gear drive and motors are smooth and slew the telescope to almost 4 degrees per second from one object to another. The tracking is accurate and quiet. I find the compact Starbook controller to be very easy to use with its options of operating the mount with either drop down menus or scrolling the star chart and clicking Goto when the desired object appears on the display. This is the ideal mount if you want a portable automated mount. This mount will hold any optical tube (under 15 lbs) with the Vixen Universal Dovetail Plate. You can change the optical tube for different observing sessions.
Astronomy Magazine found that "Vixen's Skypod Mount, with its StarBook controller provides full go-to capability in a lightweight package". They go on to state that "there is nothing light about the StarBook database. The Skypod is an innovative design that takes grab and go astronomy to a new level." Clear Skies, Mr StarGuy
The Skypod Alt Az Mount is a unique portable computer controlled "Go To" mount that evolved from the very successful Vixen Sphinx mounts. The Skypod Alt Az Mount ncorporates a compact computer controlled system that automatically slews the telescope from one object to another. This new and portable GoTo travel mount uses the modified Starbook S hand controller that offers the same practical user concept of the Sphinx controller. A display shows you a map of the sky so that you always know where you are. Navigate by object name or use the starchart to plan your observing session. The 22,000 plus object, upgradeable data base, provides an endless variety of objects to view.
The controller is integrated into the mount. You can take it off for remote control, but you can always put it back for safe storage and transport. This means that for transport you can avoid all the separate small parts that are otherwise easily lost. Because the Skypod it is based on Vixen's flexible mounting system, a wide variety of telescopes will easily and quickly attach to this mount. Skypod provides good portability combined with ease of use and versatility. Covered by a 5 Year Warranty (1 Year on Electronics)
