Vixen A70Lf with Porta II Mount
If you are looking for the an affordable starting package, the A70Lf with Porta Mount II is the one. This package combines sharp optics and a rock solid, light weight mount. It takes just seconds to place the telescope on the mount and you are ready for an evening of observing.
The A70Lf is an Achromatic Refractor with 70mm (2.8”) of aperture. Its focal length is 900mm (3 ft.) with an f ratio of 12.9. This lightweight telescope has a maximum magnifying power of 143x and reaches a limiting visual magnitude of 11. Its light gathering is 100 times better than the human eye and has a maximum (realistic) power of 143X. The A70Lf Refractor weighs about 4 lbs and is covered by Vixen's 5 Year Warranty.
"When I first started in amateur astronomy, I did as most beginners and purchased a department store telescope that advertised the most power. (700x I believe) Unfortunately, again like most beginners, I found that the advertised power was impossible due to the size of the telescope and more importantly the lack of stability of the mount."
"Time and again I speak to parents and children who tell me how frustrated they are that after finding Saturn in a beginner telescope they can’t get a good view of the rings because the mount is too shaky or the telescope controls too difficult to adjust. I hear many tell me that they tried once many years ago and now the scope is sitting in a closet collecting dust!"
The NEW Porta Mount II is an easy to use, light weight, stable mount. It has the vixen dove tail connection to easily attach your telescope and smooth friction bearing up-down / right-left hand controls.
For so many years the beginning astronomer was forced to buy a mount that was unstable and almost useless when viewing at high power. More often than not, the frustration of using an unstable mount resulted in the telescope only being used for one night and being left in a closet to collect dust. The Porta mount changed all that. It is one of Vixen's proudest designs. The combination of smooth movement, rigid design and stable platform makes your first use a pleasure and will bring you back to view more and more of the night sky. The Universe Today says "The Porta Mount II is quality through and through, it's not going to just fall apart on you and it would be oh-so-easy to adapt any number of other scopes right to it just as easily as the R130Sf went into place." Clear Skies, Mr StarGuy
The Porta II is a solid altazimuth mount with a 20lb payload capacity and features Slow Motion Flexible Handles to minimize vibrations and keep your view sharp. This is very useful in searching and tracking celestial objects. The Sky at Night says: "When moving the telescope around the sky with this mount, we found any vibrations quickly dampened down. The whole system was very stable, even when the tripod was at its maximum extended height"*. The mount head is easily removed to allow for a switch to a heavier tripod. In addition, this is a great mount for terrestrial viewing. With no locks or clutches, our gear drives make it a simple matter to precisely track a planet or a ship on the horizon by turning the elevation and/or azimuth control handles. The Porta II Mount features slow motion control of both axes, solid central bolt for easy tripod change, flex handles and accessory tray.
The “World-Standard” dovetail attachment system on PORTA II was developed by Vixen. This allows the PORTA II to accept various dovetail mounted optical tubes and binoculars.
