Vixen ED81S 80mm ED APO with GP2 Package
The Scope: The Vixen ED81SWT is a top-line APO refractor telescope: made in Japan with new ED "eco glass" (lead and arsenic free). These telescope designs have faster focal ratios and a more compact length compared to the prior ED 80S telescope. The new optics on the Vixen ED81S are especially good at suppressing the dispersion of violet light, this avoids halos and blooming around images of bright stars. Coupled with a medium f/7.7 focal ratio, the ED “S” series provide a sharp, color-free image of high contrast for both visual and photographic applications. The big Vixen 60mm drawtube means these refractors can handle the full line of Vixen drawtube accessories. Vixen finishing touches include carry handle, and 1/2-20 stud for piggyback camera mounting. Vixen's new Dual Speed Focuser, now standard on the ED81S, provides fine focus adjustments for 1/7th speed focusing.
The Mount: The GP2 mount's aluminum die-cast body is strong and light with accurate tracking accomplished by dual 144-tooth aluminum worm wheels and a brass R.A. worm gear machined to better than 0.002-mm tolerance.
This mount comes fully equipped: metal setting circles, bubble-level, fine adjustment knobs for altitude/azimuth, and 3.7-kg (8-lb) counterweight are standard. Motors on each axis make this system complete for visual observation and tracked astro photography. Smooth Accurate Tracking with Vixen's GP2 Equatorial Mount makes it a platform for serious astronomers. This easy to use mount functions well for both the visual observer and the astrophotographer. The GP2 is an excellent choice for observers who want a simple, yet sturdy mount, with the ability to grow.

When The ED81S was introduced last year it set a new standard for 80mm APO Refractors. The combination of better color correction from the new ED glass and brighter images from it's fast f/7.7 focal ratio will satisfy the most demanding visual astronomer or astro-photographer. The new ED glass is made from environmentally friendly lead free materials. The optical tube is very stable yet light weight. The top carry handle also includes a 1/2-20 stud for piggyback camera mounting.
