This ingeniously designed equatorial mount is really lightweight and portable: It weighs only 7-3/4 lbs (3-1/2kg) and, with the 5-1/2" long counterweight shaft removed, will fit in a 7" X 8" X 3-3/4" space! Takahashi suggests a 5 pound load capacity, but I have read reviews (Sky & Telescope Test Report from August, 2000 by Johnny Horne) where loads were substantially heavier. Still, this mount is meant for a small refractor or camera set-up (medium-format is fine), and was created for the amateur astronomer who wished to travel lightly and still take a telescope with them.
The Sky Patrol III comes with a thin hand controller, with fast and slow buttons, a reversing switch (makes the mount usable in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere), and an illuminated power switch.
The mounting surface is threaded for two 5/16/18 screws, but if your equipment has 1/4-20 threads, you will need to purchase one of the optional adapters (see accessories tab for a selection.)
