Coronado filters are used around the world by serious solar enthusiasts and professional research facilities alike. When properly and safely mounted on your high quality refractor or other suitable telescope this filter set allows observation and imaging of the amazing and ever changing surface detail and prominences on the Sun in hydrogen-alpha (Ha) light. Custom mounting will be required (adapters not included).
The patented RichView tuning assembly allows direct tuning of the primary filter etalon. No other commercially available Ha telescope can provide the tuning range and accuracy of the SolarMax II. Like the smaller 60mm filter the SolarMax 90 can be used on almost any telescope design under 3000mm focal length. However, the larger 90mm aperture increases resolution and allows for the user to view individual sections of solar activity at high magnification and when viewing at full disk the user gets the impression of curvature on the surface. The extra resolution will provide some stunning views; you haven't seen the sun until you have looked 'down' through a filament onto an active region. The SolarMax 90 provides consistent and breathtaking H-Alpha views.
All SolarMax series filters are sold in sets. The front mounted SolarMax and rear blocking filter. Almost all telescopes will require an adaptor plate in order to attach the SolarMax, these are available from Coronado or through your dealer. The SolarMax includes a T-Max de-tuning filter. Some events on the Sun,- notably active flares and coronal mass ejections (CME), are extremely fast moving. If such features occur on the disc of the Sun, their high velocity towards the observer results in their wavelength being Doppler shifted shorter than Ha. If the velocity is high enough, this wavelength could be outside the passband of the filter and the feature would not be observable. The T-Max allows the user to de-tune the SolarMax slightly to bring such phenomena into better visibility.
SolarMax 90 can also be paired with a second SolarMax 90, second T-Max and an interface adaptor. This will reduce the bandwidth of the 90mm filter system to <0.5A and will greatly increase the contrast of the image. This addition is priced at $4,625.00. Be aware this creates a very top heavy set up and we recommend the use of a Coronado internal module to narrow the bandwidth instead of double stacking two 90mm filters. We recommend this configuration with the Coronado MaxScope due to the optimal design of this telescope allowing effective use of a double filter system. We make the internal module for a range of popular telescopes and will provide that information on request. Installing a module is not a permanent alteration to your host telescope. Not all SolarMax filters will match in this configuration and it is recommended that you send your filter to Coronado to have this work done.
