The KAF-8300 Image Sensor is a 22.5mm diagonal (Four Thirds Format) high performance color or monochrome full frame CCD (charge-coupled device) image sensor designed for a wide range of image sensing applications including digital imaging. Each pixel contains blooming protection by means of a lateral overflow drain thereby preventing image corruption during high light level conditions. For the color version, each of the 5.4µm square pixels are patterned with an RGB mosaic color filter with overlying microlenses for improved color response and reproduction. Several versions of monochrome devices are available with or without microlenses.The sensor utilizes the TRUESENSE Transparent Gate Electrode to improve sensitivity compared to the use of a standard front side illuminated polysilicon electrode.The TRUESENSE Transparent Gate Electrode significantly improves the sensitivity available from front-illuminated Full Frame CCD devices by increasing the amount of light entering the pixel for detection.In a Full Frame CCD design, each pixel is covered by electrodes which allow charge to be read out of the device – as different voltages are applied to the electrodes, charge is “pushed” from pixel to pixel and then into the readout register. In standard semiconductor manufacturing, these electrodes are manufactured from polysilicon, which absorbs light and reduces the overall sensitivity of the pixel. The TRUESENSE Transparent Gate Electrode is manufactured using a different material – Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) – which is not only electrically conductive but also optically transparent, allowing light to enter the pixel without obstruction.
With this ITO electrode design, devices that utilize the TRUESENSE Transparent Gate Electrode have significantly higher sensitivity compared to devices that only use polysilicon electrodes: Sensitivity at 400 nm is improved by a factor of 10, and increased by 50% across the majority of the visible spectrum.
The key to any high-quality camera is the ability to convert light collected by the sensor into digital information, while ensuring that as little noise as possible is added. The digital image needs to truly reflect the light collected. The Atik 383L+ achieves this, having:
- Very low read-noise, 7 electrons, on a par with many Sony sensors, enabling faint details to be detected.
- Great linearity, with a regression correlation coefficient of R = 0.9998 over the range 1,000 to 64,000, making the camera suitable for sensitive photometric measurements.
- The bias frame histogram from the camera shows the ideal Gaussian shape, indicating that maximum detail can be extracted upon processing
