The Atik 4000 large format cooled CCD camera provides the serious Astronomer a gateway into the world of large-format Imaging. It incorporates a 4-million pixel Kodak KAI-04022 (Mono) sensor with 7.4µm x 7.4µm pixel size At 15mm x 15mm the sensor array is a perfect fit for standard 1.25'' filters, eliminating the need for the larger 2" filters.
Resolution from the Atik 4000 is excellent for printing at A4 or even A3 size, plus when viewing images on a computer monitor and seeing details emerging at higher zoom levels is a truly amazing experience.. Both MONO (#ATK0043) and COLOR (#ATK0044) versions of the Atik 4000 are available and the Atik 4000 (as do all) the large-format Atik cameras incorporate Truesense Kodak CCD chips. Kodak sensors have earned a tremendous reputation in astrophotography, Kodak sensors require dark frames to be used for calibration, and these must be taken at the same temperature as the primary image. The Atik 4000 achieves this through highly accurate temperature regulation using a two-stage Peltier element and fan. This can provide cooling to 40 degrees below ambient, and should be quite suffient for the majority of conditions. However, for even more demanding use, water can be pumped through the camera's internal Heat Exchanger. When water cooling is employed, obviously the maximum level of cooling depends on the water temperature being supplied to the heat exchanger. Approximately 45 degrees of cooling can be achieved using water from most any cold water tap. Such efficient cooling reduces thermal noise to an absolute minimum and effectively controls the presence of "hot" pixels. but it raises the risk of condensation forming in the camera. A highly efficient dessicant is used to dry the air inside the sensor chamber, thereby preventing internal condensation. Meanwhile, condensation on the outside of the camera is avoided through the use of thermo-electric heater elements which gently warm the optical window. The power supplied to this heater is controllable through software (included) so that it can be adapted to the environmental conditions.
The Atik 4000 series large-format cameras have been designed and built to meet the needs of the most demanding users, yet offer unparalleled simplicity of use. They have only two plug-ins - a 2.1mm socket for the 12V power supply, and a USB2 port for communicating with your computer. The cameras are also compatible with Atiks' highly acclaimed Capture software, as well as with Astroart, CCDSoft and Maxim DL.
The Truesense Kodak KAI-04022 Image Sensor is a high performance 4 million pixel sensor designed for a wide range of scientific and astro-photography applications. The 7.4 μm square pixels with microlenses provide high sensitivity and the large full well capacity results in high dynamic range. The two high-speed outputs and binning capabilities allow for 16-50 frames per second (fps) video rate for the progressively scanned images. The vertical overflow drain structure provides antiblooming protection and enables electronic shuttering for precise exposure control. Other features include low dark current, negligible lag and low smear. The Atik 4000 is fitted with a KAI 04022 sensor as standard.
CCD grades? The Truesense KAI-04022 Interline Transfer sensor comes in a single commercial grade and is qualified as having no column defects.
