Apogee Ascent A1050 Monochrome Camera
Apogee Ascent cameras work great with scientific computer processes that are extremely demanding. The Ascent's high sensitivity sensors can detect very weak signals that aren't visible by humans or other astrophotography CCD equipment. Apogee has made sure the Ascent camera series is equipped with portable and easy installation methodsm with USB 2.0 which most computers now these days have. In addition, the cameras feature high resolution which can detect very small detail in large field of views. Since the Ascent cameras have micron pixel ranges from 6.8-7.4 microns, they make a great choice to balance optical balance and dynamic ranges. If the user chooses to use the optional CRI liquid crystal tunable filters, these Apogee cameras acquire stunning publication quality color images. All Ascent cameras come with software that is simple. An ActiveX software development kit and Linux drivers are available from Apogee.
The Ascent camera series from Apogee ship with advanced and simpler features than previous cameras. The Ascent cameras use forced air that accurately regulates heat. These new Apogee cameras can withstand temperature delta's of approximately 30C below ambient temperature. The Ascent CCD cameras also come with a new optional advance filter wheel by Apogee, the AL-AFW25-4R. This filter wheel gives more convenience when using your camera. It plugs in simply to the front of the camera with no other steps. Another great feature ofn the Ascent cameras from Apogee include computer compatibility with drivers. Last but not least, the Ascent cameras can take a maximum of 65535 image sequence rate.
Components of the Apogee Ascent A1050 Camera:
Kodak Sensor KAI-1050
The Apogee Ascent A1050 CCD Camera features a KODAK KAI-01050 Image Sensor with a 1-megapixel CCD in a 1/2” (8 mm diagonal) format. The KAI-01050 uses the Kodak Truesense 5.5 micron Interline Transfer CCD Platform to broaded dynamic range with excellent imaging performance. The Kodak sensor also has flexible readout architectures with 1,2, or 4 outputs full resolutions at 120 frames a second. Image blooming can be suppressed by a vertical overflow drain and electronic shuttering is now possible to enhance and improve performance. Other features this sensor adds to this Apogee Ascent camera include low dark current, negligible lag, and low smear.
The Kodak KAI-1050 in the Apogee A1050 CCD consists of 12 dark reference rows at the top and 12 dark rows at the bottom. It is not recommended that you use the dark rows as a reference level, instead use the 22 dark columns on the left or right for reference levels.
Kodak and Apogee recommend that the 20 center columns be used under normal cirumnstances because of light leakage.
8 unshielded pixels adjacent to any leading or trailing dark reference regions are classified as active buffer pixels. These pixels are light sensitive but are not tested for defects and non-uniformities.
An electronic representation of an image is formed when incident photons falling on the sensor plane create electron-hole pairs within the individual silicon photodiodes. These photoelectrons are collected locally by the formation of potential wells at each photosite. Below photodiode saturation, the number of photoelectrons collected at each pixel is linearly dependent upon light level and exposure time and nonlinearly dependent on wavelength. When the photodiodes charge capacity is reached, excess electrons are discharged into the substrate to prevent blooming.
Adherence to the power-up and power-down sequence is critical. Failure to follow the proper power-up and power-down sequences may cause damage to the sensor. See Power Up and Power Down Sequencesection.
Ascent® Camera Series
The Ascent Camera Series supports a variety of interline transfer sensors with high quantum efficiency and low dark current. Most cameras are available with a choice of monochrome sensor or color sensor with a Bayer mosaic. Low noise and small pixels are ideal for OEM applications, astrophotography, biological sciences, guiding / adaptive optics, and other high frame rate applications.
