The 14” EdgeHD optical tube is the largest version of the Celestron EdgeHD series. It has an exceptional light gathering power of 2581x more than the human eye, meaning it gathers the most light when compared to other catadioptric optical tubes Celestron designs. The EdgeHD 1400 is a step up from the traditional Schmidt-Cassegrain, but still has the same natural slow focal ratio by using both a corrective plate and primary mirror. A major advantage to this is it eliminates the coma effect at the edge of the field of view that cause stars to have streaks of light. This creates uniform high definition images. While Schmidt Cassegrain's won’t provide the same contrast that a normal refractor would, planets will still look outstanding due to the extremely slow focal ratio of f/11 and the addition of StarBright XLT coatings which improves light transmission higher than most other traditional aluminum coatings.
Another remarkable feature with the Celestron EdgeHD 1400 and other Schmidt-Cassegrain designs is their ability to accommodate numerous accessories to change their optical specifications. The built in Fastar system in which there is a removable secondary mirror serves as a great addition to this optical tube because it creates a much faster focal ratio of f/2, which makes it more suitable for deep sky observing even when using the largest CCD chips on the market. When using a faster focal ratio, it creates a wider field, reduces exposure times, and allows more flexibility with using bigger pixels and binning.

EdgeHD is an aplanatic Schmidt telescope designed to produce aberration-free images across a wide visual and photographic field of view. The optical system was designed to reduce more than just off-axis star coma, but also to give an astrograph quality flat focal plane all the way to the edge of the field of view.
