Vixen ED103S with GPD2 Mount and STARBOOK-S

The Scope:  The Vixen ED103S is an apochromatic refractor, with fantastic contrast and a 4" aperture, sufficient for viewing planets and many stars.  With its ED glass elements, chromatic aberration has been reduced to nearly undetectable levels, permitting a much more practical use of the higher magnifications.   Vixen’s ED Glass has brought refractors back to the forefront of premium telescope choices, to compete with the 8" and larger ubiquitous Schmidt-Cassegrains that bring in enormous quantities of light but simply cannot compare to the contrast of the apochromatic refractor. The flip-mirror adapter allows either 90° or straight-through observing.  With an eyepiece upon each end of the flip-mirror, you can quickly switch between the two as the declination of your object of interest changes its location in the sky.

The Mount:  The GPD2 equatorial mount is the stronger and heftier of the GP mounts. It is easy to use and functions well for both the visual observer and astrophotography. With it’s solid steel R. A. and Declination axes and brass worm gears this mount will hold up to years of heavy use. In order to assure accurate tracking for astrophotography the worm, gears are especially machined to a very high precision that minimizes periodic error.

The Upgrade:   GP2 Mount with the addition of the new Starbook S Go-To System - the most affordable astrophotographers mount available. The new STARBOOK S incorporates Vixen’s legendary GOTO controller with BUILT IN STAR CHART that shows you exactly where the telescope is pointing and displays “what’s up” right now. The included (and upgradeable) software contains a 22,000 object database giving the user an endless variety of objects to view. Included are drop down menus of different categories of celestial objects, including Stars, Planets, Messier, NGC and other famous objects. Each sub menu only lists the objects that are available to be viewed at that time. This eliminates the frustration of other GOTO systems that don’t tell you the object is below the horizon until after you have selected it. With the Vixen Starbook you will spend more time viewing and less time searching.

The newly designed high definition ED lens on the ED103S gives excellent optical performance with a short optical tube for easy handling. The new ED lenses feature brighter images from the shorter f/7.7 focal ratio and capture crisp, pinpoint star images for your eye's enjoyment. The new ED103S lenses are made with environment-friendly technologies, free of hazardous lead that helps to support a cleaner global environment.

The optical tube comes equipped with a metal carry handle for easy one-hand carrying. The new lenses focus the full visible spectrum of visible light to a critical point much more accurately than past ED product. The ED103S lenses are almost free of chromatic aberration in all colors and are critically sharp edge to edge. The astro-photographer will be especially pleased with the high contrast images through this telescope.
