The CGEM DX sets itself apart from many other equatorial mounts because of its payload capacity and independently adjustable alt/az design. With a 50 pound payload capacity, this mount can handle the 11" and 14" optical tube assemblies with no problem and yet still slew at 5 degrees per second. Using the proprietary feature known as All-Star™ alignment allows users to choose any bright star, while the software calculates and assists with polar alignment. All the user must do is slew to a bright star (the farther from the NCP and closer to the meridian the better) and adjust the alt/az controls to align the mount with the NCP prior to observing. The CGEM DX mount is simply one of the best for astrophotography with its stability and performance. Astro-imagers will be thrilled to know that the mount can track accurately through the clearest part of the sky, the meridian, with no need for a "meridian flip". In addition, Periodic Error Correction (PEC) is also supported to correct any "play" in the worm gears to improve and reduce guiding errors. The GoTo controllers that Celestron implemented into this mount include a database of >40,000 celestial objects. These include named stars, planets and the moon, as well as Messier, NGC, and IC deep sky catalogs and detailed information on 200 of those.
The CGEM DX 1400 HD includes a 14" Corrected Schmidt-Cassegrain EdgeHD based optical tube assembly. Some of the main key advantages of this optical design from Celestron are how well it can output pinpoint and sharp image of stars even at the "Edge" of the field of view. The EdgeHD system takes the basic Schmidt-Cassegrain design a step further by making a focal plane three times flatter than standard Schmidt designs. This is a total plus for astrophotography because it ensures that stars will be pinpoint objects even on the edges of the field of view. Therefore, even astro-imagers using some of the largest CCD sensors, will capture images still uniformly pinpoint and coma free.
Some companies boast that their telescopes give diffraction limited stars in the very center of the field of view. EdgeHD optics not only produce diffraction limited stars on axis, but maintain diffraction limited stars across the entire field of view of many of the most popular astrophotography cameras. Even at the very edge of a full frame camera chip, the EdgeHD 14" delivers star sizes of only 1 arc second! Also, Starbright XLT Multicoatings ensure maximum light transmission diffraction free.
Additional Features Include:
- MIRROR LOCKS – To hold the mirror in place and reduce image shift during imaging.
- TUBE VENTS - Each vent has an integrated 60 micron micro-mesh filter allowing hot air to be released from behind the primary mirror.
- FASTAR VERSATILITY – All EdgeHD optical tubes are equipped with a removable secondary mirror for fast f/2 CCD imaging. Not only does imaging in the FASTAR configuration allow for exposure times that are 25 times faster than at f/10, but also yields a field of view five times wider. The perfect combination for imaging your favorite wide field objects in a fraction of the time. (FASTAR imaging requires a third party lens assembly in place of the secondary mirror).
